In 1981, Yasar Halim opened his first branch in Haringey at 495 Green Lanes, N4 1AL, which at the time was a vibrant area where many Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots were based. The shop, named after him, became an established market for people of Cypriot heritage and other cultures alike. Since its inception, Yasar Halim has been cherished for its breads, cakes, pastries, and fresh produce. The aroma of freshly baked breads poured into the atmosphere, inviting everyone to try them.
The supermarket offered a range of Mediterranean foods, fresh fruits, and vegetables. The market also imported fresh produce from Cyprus, including okra, Cyprus greens, and unique Cyprus potatoes. Yasar Halim was a go-to place for finding products reminiscent of Cypriot cuisine. It wasn’t long before this family-run business became a trusted bakery within the community.
In 1997, it was time to expand the name. A brand-new shop was opened in the Palmers Green area, which was also the heart of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot community.
In 2021, Yasar Halim celebrated its 40th anniversary. Sadly, we lost Yasar Halim, who passed away in January 2020, but the Halim family continues his legacy by expanding with new shops, including our Southgate branch, and launching online shopping and home delivery.
We are also launching Yasar Halim Kitchen for hot food, which you can get delivered. The hot foods are our favorite Cypriot meals, just like the way our mothers and grandmothers cook them. Additionally, we’ve launched our "Bake at Home" range, where you can take your favorite bakery products straight from the freezer, place them in the oven for a few minutes, and have them perfectly ready for breakfast—so convenient and reminiscent of the taste of Cyprus.
Furthermore, we have introduced ready-to-bake meals, allowing you to take your favorite dishes, such as Molehiya, Bamya (Okra), and Firin Makarna (Oven Macaroni), from the freezer, put them into the oven, and have them ready in about an hour. These are fantastic for convenience in today’s fast-paced life—just slip them into the oven, and they’re ready for you. We strive to be as prominent within the community as we were back in 1981.
